[Electric Boats] Re: My eboat ready to launch

Boats are by nature a series of compromises and every installation in impacted by the unique nature of the boat and how he sailor wants to use the boat.  James and I had an off line conversation about motor speed and power results and we both agreed that set up - gearing - propeller - battery chemistry - hull condition - will all impact speed and power.  James and I both agree that you can achieve superior results at lower speed but may impact the ability to get to efficient higher speeds.

I naturally go to our business and engineering model.  As a vendor we commit and warrant the systems with the goal of always wanting to reach hull speed much like the original boat builder and designer desired.  This might not be the case with other installations.  With that thinking, we build and test the system to reach hull speed for emergency response and provide a good modest power usage when in cruising at slow speeds.  On top of that when we provide a computer model we try to error on the conservative side as we want the real life installation to meet or exceed the projections. For this sixe boat (we have converted over 30 Catalina's) We describe our systems as having peak power (i.e. 200a X 48v = 9600w for about 10 to 15 minutes) but will run at a constant 8160w for extended time.  The net usage is that most clients run their boat at about 4kts and that uses significantly less power.  This we feel is what the general market wants but not everyone and I should not assume that is what you may want in your installation.

As an example, we have an installation on a CT41 (26000lbs) of our 20kW motor.  After the installation he could not reach the numbers that our projections indicate.  We then found out he hull and underwater running gear was in poor condition and he propeller was significantly different than what was originally presented at the time we built the system.  Engineering took the new results and recalculated and sent new gears to the customer.  Swapping out of the drive gears (about an hours work) with the customer repairing the running gear, he then was able to reach hull speed and also significantly improve cruising speed.

It is not easy building a consumer product that is warranted to perform as presented.
