If you require 5kt for 5 hours, electric might not be for you. That would require a really big bank. I am thinking 400ah at the least, at 48v. Just a guess, going by my own results with a slightly smaller boat and 220ah at 48v with FLA. If you mount 800 or 1000w of solar panels off your pushpit rail it would help a little, to extend your range but even under perfect conditions 1kw of solar is not going to keep up at much over 2kts, I am thinking. A 2kw portable generator would be a useful thing to have. VERY INEFFICIENT but a quick and dirty way to get home if your bank gets too low.
When you push the envelope that hard, you probably do want to spring for LiFeP04 prismatic cells of respectable size, in series. Otherwise you end up with a ton of batteries and likely have to wire in series/parallel. The LiFeP04 cells have a very high energy density and tolerate deep discharges fairly well. They are much safer than some other lithium types, apparently.
How much weight of batteries can you carry? Keeping in mind that the first 400lbs or so are freebies, having ditched the old diesel and fuel tank.
Most e-boaters run at a bit over half that speed if they want max range. You can go fast. You can go far. You can have a convenient and economically sized bank that is easy to charge. Take your pick. ONE of the three, you can have. Not all three, not even any two.
Batteries and charging are the major limiting factors with EP. Within reasonable operating parameters electric is wonderful. If you want diesel power and range, you need a diesel, at least for now.
