Brian, I have two separate 20a DC/DC converters and no separate house bank. These units are dirt cheap from China and might not be reliable though I have not yet seen a failure. But even installing two of them for redundancy is still cheap. I highly suggest a separate battery altogether for emergency service to bilge pumps, radio, and emergency lighting. Best bang for the buck would be a pair of golf cart batteries in series but any deep cycle solution would work fine if you have at least 200ah or so capacity. Normal house loads, take from the propulsion bank via converter.
Of course the quick and dirty way to get 12v is to tap the bank at 12v above the negative end. But then you are possibly grounding the negative end of the propulsion bank, something most eboat guys prefer not to do. Anyway it is bad practice to tap the bank and draw unequally from it.
