Another update: I replaced the PWM controller with a 4QD Porter 5, which has a rating of 50A continuous, and a big aluminum plate heatsink. This PWM operates at 20kHz, lower frequency than the 100kHz of the Chinese PWM controllers. Unfortunately, it confuses my power meter terrible at anything less than full speed. I've tried adding filtering, but so far I haven't been successful at filtering the noise.
Also, the Haswing Osapian 55lb has been getting quite tempermental, as in won't turn until I tap the motor housing a few times, then it runs fine. I suspect this is brush wear and commutator corrosion. I tried opening up the motor housing, but with the bolts pulled, I could not free the three parts of the housing from each other. Even using an oil filter wrench to apply torque to one section while tapping. I susect they are welded together by corrosion. Any suggestions?
I decided to buy a new trolling motor: a Haswing Protrar 1.0 (65lb, 12V) brushless motor. It is more efficient than the Osapian at low speeds (comparing both with stock props). In fact, I could make LOL move at about 2.5km/h on solar power alone, on a surreal day where forest fire smoke limited visibility to about 5km. Top speed maxes out at 35-40A and about 6 km/h, or about the same as the Osapian. What's interesting is that the Protrar is noticeably noisier than the Osapian. It whines and growls, whereas the Osapian just hummed as it burbled along. Still WAY quieter than a 2hp outboard, since all the noise is underwater. I'm not sure what the seals think though. The speed control is very smooth, with automatic ramping. It even tolerates when you hook the battery up backwards (yikes!). I'd like to try it with an APC 11x6 prop.
