Re: [Electric Boats] Electric Yacht system

Eric,

How far along are you in your conversion ? I too plan on a second bank.
I have recently heard a 48v lithum can be bought for under $600, which
would constitute a bargain. Scott will be sending a 100ib unit. I doubt
I will exceed half an hour of "juice" on one sailing outing. It takes
about five minutes to clear the slips and catch the first breeze, and the
return is the same. My initial testing will be done on the two blade
prop until the three blade arrives. Taking the old engine out, gas tank,
and miscellaneous paraphernalia is very time-consuming. Not to mention
the fiberglassing of the old holes where history was started, and making
the engine compartment a showroom for the future of electric.

Don,

I'm familiar with Electric Yachts and was wondering which of their
systems that they recommended for your boat. I assume it was either the
100ib or the 130ib and that you'll be running 48v. I see that you're
planning on using 4 group 27 batteries which should give you about 2.3
kWh usable storage. You may find that you get less than an hour at 50A
before you're down to a 40% charge. The good news is that if you add
another battery bank in parallel, your effective range more than doubles
because each bank is getting hit with half the amps and batteries have
more capacity at lower discharge rates.

My plan is to get my boat running with one bank and add another one after
some of the kinks have been worked out. It also will give my wallet a
chance to recover a little before the second round.

I'm looking forward to hearing about your actual results.

Fair winds,
