Re: [electricboats] Prop rotation

I've been thinking you probably only need one more lesson on your boat before starting to take it pronto your own. Sunday looks as good as any other time.

The Perm 132 motor I have (permanent magnet brushed DC) has the brushes offset slightly from 'neutral' so the motor 'favours' a certain direction. I don't run it at sufficient power for it to have a significant effect (and with my setup the motor is running in reverse most of the time), but if I was running at full rated power in 'reverse' the bushes would arc more and wear faster.

The maintenance manager told me some big industrial DC motors had the brushes on a sliding assembly that moved when the motor reversed to keep the brushes at the optimal location with out the need for additional interpole coils.
