[electricboats] Safety of LiFePO4 chemistry [was 'Re: importing batteries wholesale']

Myles, you are very passionate about this subject, and I respect that.  The conversion to electric propulsion throughout society will need passion behind it to bring people along.
To be circumspect, though, your experience is but one example of things going right.  This is great, and no one on this list would want to see some other sailor lose their vessel to fire.
Continuing the discussion you started with Kev regarding the supposed safety of LiFePO4 chemistry versus other Li-Ion chemistries, in addition to individual experiences and stories (anecdotal evidence) someone who wants to be more fully informed may wish to consult thoroughly researched, professional or expert resources.
Those who wish to understand the issue better might do well to start here: https://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/safety_of_lithium_ion_batteries.
As some readers are already aware, "Risk" is two-dimensional.  There's the dimension of likelihood; i.e. how likely is the risk event under consideration to occur.  And there's the dimension of impact; i.e. what is the likely outcome of the risk event actually occurring.
Mariners build in extra safety factors into everything they do because the impact to a boat and its occupants out on open water of the occurrence of a risk event could be catastrophic.  If you're driving a car and it starts smoking, you have the option of stopping and getting the hell out of there.  On the open water, you can abandon ship, but you're only trading one bad situation for another.
My point is, Myles, that your passionate response to the question is more of a self-assurance than it is helpful to anyone really wanting to approach a conversion in the most prudent and safe manner possible.  Yes it's possible to make a discarded automotive battery pack work aboard a boat, but the current state of knowledge is that LiFePO4 chemistry is less likely to fail catastrophically than other chemistries.  People considering their conversion specifications should inform themselves fully and understand the trade-offs of selecting one over another.  In a marine application, a lot of boaters are going to opt for safety as a #1 consideration.
