[Electric Boats] Re: Cape Dory

Hi Jofre,

You're in luck. The Cape Dory displaces less than 4 tons, so most of the regular drive systems available from vendors will work well. You should have a drive that is rated for 4kW continuous, and you certainly won't need anything more powerful than 5.5kW.

You should check out the vendors that are regulars here, they all have many satisfied customers and they support what they sell. Look for (in alphabetical order) Advanced Marine electric Propulsion, Annapolis Hybrid Marine (seller of ASMO drives), Electric Yacht, and Propulsion Marine. They all sell good products, I chose Propulsion Marine in Santa Barbara when I converted my Cheoy Lee Bermuda 30, I couldn't be happier with the product and the vendor support.

Your description of how you use your boat is similar to mine and you sound like a prime candidate for electric conversion. I would say that you would be as happy as I am if you converted your boat, my boat is much nicer to use since the conversion.

Feel free to ask questions here if you get overwhelmed or confused about your potential project. Additionally, your selected vendor will be able to step you through the process, of course.

Fair winds,
Eric

I been reading some of the emails you sent but they can be very technical for me about systems and converting from diesel to electric. I use this boat to go around the bay, more like a weekend than traveling long distance. I like sailing so most probably I be using the motor to approach the marina or set my sails. I appreciate your time.
