Re: [Electric Boats] 60 foot Solar Cruiser - Project Breakdown Part 2: Solar Array

I totally diagree with this price-and-hull comment, myself.
Price is a primary concern for 99% of users, as total system capacity is
limited by your funds, and not your work, ability, area etc.

Also, prices vary by a factor of over 400% -
Making a large -scale system cost total from 40.000$ to 160.000 $.

All modern competitive-priced PV arrays today have similar efficiencies,
18%-20% or so.
The bigger panels are usually better, ie a 225 or 250 or 200W panel is
usually 2-4% more efficient than a 165W panel.
Note that 2% more from 20% is a 10% difference in PV panel effiency.

In a nutchell (pun intended), at 20%, you get 200 W / square meter (or
need 32 sq.m for 6.4 kW for the Sunelecs).
You can very easily extend your panels area over the sides and behind
your boat, with no real detrimental effects.
For marina use, make them swing or slide.

Steel mounts are easy and cheap to fabricate, anywhere in the world.
The hull is, again, the least important part of the equation, imo.
