Hanermo has articulated what I was trying to say. A vague concept is easy and often a dead end or previously developed. A vetted idea with quantified value (a reason to do it) and estimated cost/effort (what it might take) is more valuable. These two simple attributes point to whether an idea is actually viable.
That said, plenty of people do things just because they can. They will be first to admit that there is no objective reason to invest the time and money that they did, besides the pride of doing something that hasn't been done before, or done just the way that they've done it.
And an experiment that doesn't turn as good as planned is still valuable. Dr. Porsche said " If one does not fail at times, then one has not challenged himself." All great advances have been built on ideas that didn't work out.
So home-made batteries, boat drives with arrays of tiny motors, and ducted props (just to mention a few recent topics) could prove to be valuable ideas. However, without more objective info, I feel that they're only idle conversation.
And I find that one of the best parts about this group is that we're actually doing the things that we talk about, which put us ahead of 90% of the interactions on the interweb. We're all for someone asking "what if..." but be ready to back up the concept with some substance.
