Re: [Electric Boats] torgeedo motors

Hi Griffey

I've installed a Cruise 4 on my 43 ft trimaran and I'm really impressed.

The noise level is about just right for me. It has a whine but its
not intrusive. I like the low level of noise from it to give some
feedback about how hard its working.

I also have a Minn-Kota 55lb thrust, as an emergency backup, and its
perfectly quite and I can't tell when its on, or have any idea what
its throttle setting is. That is, I get no audible feedback from it,
and I find this unhelpful at times when manourvring.

Just last Friday I put her back in the water after being on the slip
for a few weeks to do some repairs and to fit some flaps the motor
well so that it presents a streamlined hull when the motor is in
use, and also when retracted for sailing. As we pulled away from the
slip cradle those on shore could not hear the Torqeedo running.

I gave it full throttle to move down the river to the jetty (not far)
and all who watched, and those of use on board were really impressed
by its power. It looks to have helped a lot to have added the
flaps. It seems that a lot of thrust was lost to the water swirling
around in the well.

In earlier tests it pulled a maximum of 6.7 knots and it will be
interesting to see how she goes now with the flaps. I hope to do
some tests later this week.

By the way, the little Minn-Kota pushes her along at about 2 knots.

I wonder if what you might have heard about the Torqeedo is that it
has as much thrust as a 9.9 outboard.

Cheers

Chris
