Hi Jeff,
Congrats on your new project, I took a quick look at your blog w/pictures.
My thoughts: Although your 54lb trolling motor will `move the boat forward', it will not do it with any efficiency, authority, or longevity. Trolling motors are neat little intermittent use inexpensive units but are simply not suited for anything more serious then, well
, trolling. And, if your are settled on the idea of sticking with a trolling motor solution you would want to use a 24v or 36v model to get more power and some better efficiency out of it. Everything you need for your installation can be gotten at the closest marine supply, as it's a very simple setup. Since you already have it there is no harm in hooking it up for testing, but you will be underwhelmed.
You can start with a shore power charger and then later add the solar panels and charge controller, they can work together no problem.
The next step up would be an electric outboard designed for primary or auxiliary propulsion, like a Torqeedo. Even Torqeedo's smallest motor (401) will be noticeably more powerful and more efficient in your application than the Motorguide. It is also about 3 times the price, but that's how it goes.
