The 12 and 24 volt torqeedo motors whined loudly, but the new cruise 4.0r is nearly perfectly quiet due to change in materials used in the planetary gears. i tested the new 4.0r and was truly impressed with its noise level and power.

You need to hear them run for yourself. I heard the noise in several youtube videos of the planetary transmission gear whine. Hearing the actual motor run at a boat show, it seemed much quieter.
Also, I believe the new 2.0 and 4.0 cruise models do not have the gear whine. I've not heard them run in person, though.
The thrust rating of an electric motor is not very relevant to the speed it will push a boat. The trolling motors are propped to produce a lot of thrust but do not work nearly as well once the boat picks up speed. It would be like driving your car in first gear all the time - lots of thrust at a standstill but no thrust at all at 30 mph. The Torqeedos have a big slow turning prop - much more efficient than the little ones turning at high speed on the trolling motors.
If you are used to 150 hp, though, don't expect much from any electric motor. The biggest Torqeedo is only 5 hp.
