Stick with the outboard if range is your concern. One gallon of gas will provide the range of 400 to 800 lbs of lead acid batteries, or several thousand dollars worth of exotics.
Outboards are easy to service or replace. Using a genny to run electric for cruising
will cost you at least 20% in effeciency, and be just as noisy as the outboard unless you spend a mint on a "silent" one.

I have a 30 ft Iroquois catamaran sailboat powered by a 9.9 high thrust Yamaha OB. It can do about 7 knts with this. Whats involved to repower electric with a generator to recharge the batteries so I can go long distance if necessary.
Is it more efficient to do this or just stick with the OB.
