I work part time for Segway dealer. Our batteries are lithium ion and our
tech contact has a pair that are seven years old and working fine. You do
need to keep them charged. It may be unique to the Segway but if they become
discharged and sit for long periods of time they are ruined. This would be
a great case for having a solar panel to keep them topped off. We always
keep the on-board charger plugged in when they are sitting in the store.
