Hi John

Thanks for your reply. I will have a genset onboard and I have plenty of room for solar on the saloon roof so the plan is to have a sort of hybrid when I can sail at reduced speeds for longer periods in emergency situations.

 

Do you know of anyone one doing full AC kit minus batteries for reasonable cost?

I run a 15kg direct drive brushed DC and whilst fine on a small boat like mine with limited power requirement, and limited prop size due to aperture, not to mention funds - I'd suggest you consider brushless AC with a gearbox for light weight (compared to heaven DC motors) to ensure an efficient prop size/shaft speed. If minimising batteries then if running at 51.2 V nominal for LiFePO4 then 4 X 200 Ah X 12.8 V for each shaft with a generator should be enough for house loads and short term electric propulsion on electric only.
