Belt CVTs were standard in snowmobiles, at least the ones I used in the 1970s. I'm sure efficiency wasn't the primary design criterion. They were used with 2 stroke engines that ran from 1000 - 6000 RPM. When a belt blew at full throttle, it was quite a little explosion under the hood.
