I see nothing to stop you if I've understood correctly - you can use 4 batteries and assuming your controller accepts voltages from 24 to 48, you then just limit controller to 36v so the prop shaft doesn't turn any faster with the gearing suggested. That way you could use a 48V charger or if 3 batteries just use individual 12 V identical chargers on each battery or if easily available 1 X 36V charger.
