Thanks for that input Mark,
I don't have any friends so guess I should ok.
Actually, I'll single handing so ok there but if I do have others onboard, I'll be sure to keep them away. I had planned to get a second battery and spare prop. Maybe now I'll get 2 spare props.

Eric,
I lived with a Torqeedo 1003L for a couple years and loved it. I used it as an auxiliary for a Cal 2-24 (24' sailboat). My dis-satisfaction came from idiots accidentally abusing it. It is plastic. It is easy to break the mounting, the handle connection, perhaps the battery mounting if you are planning to swap out batteries often. By "easy", I mean if a friend tries to use it, he will break it. Let me repeat: if a friend uses it, he will break it. If it is just you, you will likely never have any problems with it. You will have read the manual. You will have paid around $2,000 for it. You will understand it's strengths and weaknesses. It is not magic, despite being electric. Electric things are magic to most people, so they are not able to abuse the controls (handle, tilt, clamps, buttons, etc) like a "regular" outboard motor. You can kick an outboard, whack it with hammers, use as much force as you wish against position limiters, etc, and it won't know the difference.
If you abuse in any way the design functions of the Torqeedo, it will break. It is plastic.
Jerry,
You would hate a 1003. Not nearly planning speed. You are off in your expectations by a factor of 10 (maybe 10 Torqeedos, or 1/10th your expected speed at the ranges you hope for). The 1003 is like a 2hp motor with a shot glass worth of gasoline. Well... maybe a couple shots.
