Re: [Electric Boats] Line Wrap on Prop Shaft

You'd see the amp draw go up significantly, up to the max amps of the controller. At that point, battery drain and more importantly, torque and current, hence heat build up would be your limiter.
Your system should be able to handle something like that without blowing the fuse at the battery or controller.

The motor does send winding temperature to the controller and the controller will protect the motor by scaling back the power.
This would leave torque, amps and battery power. A line wrap that doesn't stop the prop from turning entirely would certainly load up the motor, but how would the controller deal with that? Is the motor voltage controlled or torque controlled? If voltage controlled, then current will just increase until either the prop reaches the target RPM for that voltage or the controller reaches max current. Once there, temperature will go up fairly quickly and then the controller will reduce power.
A line wrap the stops the prop dead could cause damage to the strut, bend the shaft -- same as with an ICE, but I don't think it would damage the motor or controller.

Perhaps some controller parameters can be tweaked to prevent self destruction In such an events rag least raising an alarm.

My local waters have lots of crab pots (similar to lobster traps). It's not unheard of to get one of these tangled around the prop and shaft - often without noticing. With my Atomic Four in this situation, the line could eventually get so tightly entangled that the engine would stall and then stop.

What would happen with an electric motor in this situation? Would the current to the motor keep increasing until the circuit breaker trips? Would the motor controller detect a big difference in the Amp/RPM ratio and make some adjustment? Or, worst case, could the motor be torn from its mount?
