RV three-way refrig systems are generally ammonia based. They use heat to make cold. Wonderous science. The upshot: 12v (or 120 or propane) is used to generate heat, not to spin a motor-compressor. Very inefficient, and RV's on the 12v mode need to make sure they don't overtax the 12v part of the system (as in, remember to shift to propane when parked for more than a couple hours).
Yet another option for the ammonia systems is to convert over to CNG, which is lighter than air. Way beyond what started this thread....
