[Electric Boats] Re: SAILOR GOING ELECT.

Hi Jim,

I looked up the Rescue Minor and was surprised to see that it is a power boat. Power boats are usually a little more difficult to convert without some major compromises. First of all, the design speed is about 15 kts and that takes 25 hp. If you want to retain that type of speed capability, then you'll need a drive that produces close to 18 to 20kW. That kind of power will drain a 1000 pound flooded cell, lead acid battery bank in about 20 minutes.

So you're going to need to slow down to get any sort of range from a reasonable size battery bank. Since your boat is designed for shallow water and has the propellor in a tunnel, you can't run a big prop like some of the successful motor launches described in this group. Electric motors like big slow props. But if you're willing to limit your top speed to about 6kts, then you should be able to put together a drive system with a couple hours worth of range that doesn't weigh more than your boat.

Fair winds,
