Re: [Electric Boats] Staying focused

When it comes to the sails If I replace any I will just sew them myself. It does not cost that much for materials. For me this is not a hobby. It is my life. I have so much money to live and that is it. So it is either do it myself or do without. I have gotten along well for the most part all my life on the "do it yourself plan".

I hope to acquire a motor in the next few days. I want to see how it fits in the compartment before I start with the interior work. I will not be able to splash it till next year.

This can be an expensive hobby. The three basic sails (main, jib and genoa) for for my 27' trimaran cost more than the $8000 that I've spent on electric conversion components for my 30' ketch. Perhaps I should take up golf... ;)

It's good to step back and get focused now and again. I find my self distracted with other systems in my boat, and working on those delays my electric conversion. I'm looking forward to the reports and pics about your conversion when you're up and running.

I am going to start back at the beginning and just get a system going that would replace a sculling oar. This is a direct drive golf cart motor (used). Simple and effective. No it will not make the boat go 7 mph, but I think it will go faster than the sculling oar. More than likely for a longer duration also. I can work on extravagant later.  One of the drop in systems like Electric Yacht or Thoosa are not that hard to make they just cost more than a direct drive. I just think if I am going to put $4,000.00 into a sailboat it should be in sails rather than aux propulsion.
