Unless you are going to supplement the generator with solar and wind or shore power I think you will get less range than by just using a diesel engine.

Now here is a question for one and all has there ever been a retrofit done on a 40'+ classic wooden hull boat in my case I am looking at a 42 foot chriscraft and I wish to do this in hopes of extending range. I do not wish for speed past the needs of coastal cruising. The plan is to replace the existing motors with electric motors installing two banks of batteries 1 for each motor and use an onboard gen set to charge the system. If this has been done or if it can be done what is/was needed to make it happen. On a side note this will be a liveaboard vessle.
