Re: [Electric Boats] Retrofiting a classic

If the gas engines still run  then Something like this could be a good no compromise answer for you: http://www.mastervolt.com/marine/products/hybridmaster1/hybridmaster-96/
The generator on your Chris-Craft is a 6.5 kw?  I am not sure how much gas you would save running the more a efficient generator instead of the monster big blocks.  Mostly because I am not sure how much of that efficiency will be lost in the conversion from mechanical power to electric back to mechanical power,  The last conversion is pretty efficient the electric motor is around 95% efficient. So the big question is how efficient your old generator is.

At the very least you would at least be able to move the boat with electric when the gas engines are being cranky.  So would add a great deal of safety to your coastal cursing.

Now here is a question for one and all has there ever been a retrofit done on a 40'+ classic wooden hull boat in my case I am looking at a 42 foot chriscraft and I wish to do this in hopes of extending range. I do not wish for speed past the needs of coastal cruising. The plan is to replace the existing motors with electric motors installing two banks of batteries 1 for each motor and use an onboard gen set to charge the system. If this has been done or if it can be done what is/was needed to make it happen. On a side note this will be a liveaboard vessle.
