I remember being taught 50 years ago as railroads were converting from steam to diesel-electric that the reason for electric was to overcome the difficulty in the mechanical clutch and transmission in very high torque applications. Can you imagine slipping the clutch on a mile long freight train?
Sid,
You're absolutely correct. Diesel-electric has been used for many decades and has proven to be more efficient than diesel alone. But there appears to be a problem of scale. Do you know of any specific examples of successful diesel-electric vehicles or vessels that weigh less than 100 tons?
