Re: [Electric Boats] Desiderata

Have to agree with ewdysar on the regen. What you get is barely significant, and can often be simply disregarded. Make sure your setup allows it (no folding prop, etc) but don't bank on it. Solar is more important, for extending your range. Wind can be useful, especially at anchor, with a crazy big wind turbine, the likes of which are not often seen on boats. A portable or permanent genset is good for when you simply HAVE to motor and the Batts are down below 60% or so. Regen pays for maybe navigation lights and charging your cell phone and tablet, not much more, rypically. A very fast and hard driven boat is a different story, but I am talking about typical usage and installations. In several days, with only the lightest load on the batts, you will see a gain, but the draw when making even 3 knots quickly uses that up. Don't bank on the regen. Just enjoy it when you get it good enough to notice it. I was once told a good rule of thumb was a week of hard sailing pays for a half day of motoring. Real world first person accounts tell me that would usually be unrealistically optimistic. I'll put it this way. I currently have a folding prop. I won't be replacing it with a fixed prop until I have other reasons for a haul out and can afford to do so.
