Re: [Electric Boats] new battery may be the ultimate answer

Good point Jason. There is a lot of battery research going on out there with truly some very "scifi" type experiments in new materials (copper foam and citric acid being one technique that is totally amazing). It is going to be interesting to see what shakes out of all the money and research in the years to come. For now though, we in the marine world have only the tried and true options of high performance AGMs (Northstar as an example) and Lithium batteries that have been proven to be safe and efficient for boat use. The answer is to choose what works best for your own situation. The nice thing about electric propulsion though is that as technology changes, if you have a good motor & controller design, then upgrading to new and improved battery technology is fairly simple. We're all moving in the right direction though!

A couple of notes on that battery. The specified range is 3000km.
Let's assume 3000km at highway speeds of about 100kph. So call it 30
hours.
After this 3000km, the battery needs to be recharged... ideally at a
dealer since it doesn't recharge simply like lithium And, it would add
100kg to the weight of a Tesla.
So, every 30 hours of use, you would have to remove this battery from
your boat and bring it to a custom charge source.

From what I did read in the article, it sounds like a variant of the
zinc-air battery.
But since the zinc-air batteries are not rechargeable, this special
recharging may involve battery core replacement.

It's certainly interesting, but I don't think this applies to us at this
point or in the next few years.
