Re: [Electric Boats] Hello, conversion project, invitation to advise - Catalina 30

The sevcon ClearView display should give you all the motor stats you need:
- battery voltage
- amps from battery
- amps to motor
- motor RPM (simple to get shaft rpm from there)
- motor temp
- controller temp

A GPS will give you speed over ground, but speed through water would be more immediately useful and wouldn't require two trips in opposite directions to cancel effects of current.

You'll want to do your tests between two fixed markers, ideally between two government aids to navigation that others can reference on NOAA charts. Open data is a good thing.
Search through the archives for posts by Eric Dysart and his Cheoy Lee Bermuda 30. His data have become the gold-standard. Once my conversion is finished, I will be running tests similar to his and posting results. My boat is using the exact same system as his and our boats are more or less similar in size, but his is a full-keel and mine a deep fin. So I am looking forward to comparing my results to his.

Cheer's,

Hello all. I am a new member and will be converting our Catalina 30. I want to keep cost low and develop the system as needed. I have been researching the archives in this group which has been a great help - thank you. Currently my plan is to get the 10kW kit with gear reduction from thunderstruck and a 200Ah LiFePO4 battery system. This should give me towards 2hrs of running time. Eventually I want to add a generator to create a serial hybrid.

I have some experience as an engineer working on control systems for power generation. I also want to sail so I want to return to a functional boat as soon as possible. My plan is to get the basic system running and see if I can develop a monitoring system that gathers performance data over time so I can tweak the prop and gears if needed.

Any suggestions for installation - components, placement, sourcing - is extremely welcome.

Cheers!

Willem
