I think in calm conditions or for docking, the 5kw motor can do the job. When you are bucking wind and seas there is more load on the system, and there may be times you would want the bigger motor and controller. My boat is 27 feet and 7600 lbs and I am going with 5kw. Assuming the wiring is proper rating, it would be simple to upgrade if the 5kw setup proves insufficient for your needs, so installing the smaller motor and controller initially might be the way to go? There are quite a few 30 foot boats with that setup. If you are satisfied with a 6 hp outboard, you should be satisfied with a 5kw motor. I had a booboo once, trying to leave the marina with a very brisk headwind and a 4hp outboard. Some minor damage from violent contact with a seawall lol. There are times when considerable power reserve is handy. If marginally powered, be aware of your limitations in marginal conditions.
