Re: [Electric Boats] Multiple source charge controller?

Just be a bit careful. Some wind generators don't like going open-circuit and need a dump load, requiring a very different controller/configuration than solar for example.

Assuming none of your sources will provide more than 10 amps, I would think you could wire multiple sources to the same charge controller, as long as you put a fuse and diode between each source and the controller.

Ex:

wind_generator => fuse => diode =>              |
solar_panel => fuse => diode =>                    |
alternator => fuse => diode =>                       |        =>  charge controller  =>  battery
shore power supply*  => fuse => diode =>     |
water regen => fuse => diode =>                    |

Note that for "shore power", you would need a "power supply", NOT a charger.  This is because any charger you buy today will be a "smart charger" that won't allow for other devices to be connected too...   You only need one "charge controller".  The shore power needs to JUST be a power supply, if that makes sense.   :)

It is possible that you could hook up the wind and solar through diodes to the charge controller, and then hook the charge controller in parallel to the shore power charger and feed both of those to the battery, but the chargers will probably confuse each other if you have multiple sources active at the same time.

Good luck!

Subject: [Electric Boats] Multiple source charge controller?

Hello - an old lurker here, but have a quest I'm sure a wise person in this group can help with. I'm looking for device that will take inputs from multiple power sources such as wind/water/solar/shore power/on board generator etc and control the the charging of a couple of battery banks. Can anyone give me a lead?

Thanks - Nick
