Not sure if you could get a longer belt, but could be a good starting point.

I agree that the u-joints wont last long. I've run a 1/4" drive U-joint on air tools and it's not very smooth during rotation. Even a CV joint isn't very good at high angles. Think of a front wheel drive car with worn CV joints - no noise (at first) driving straight, but clunking on corners. They are also quite large compared to u joints. Next time you walk by a truck have a peek underneath - you'll see several u-joints - I think they use many to reduce the angle each has to cope with.
