The thing is, you need the motor inboard to balance the tail. If not the motor, then dead weight.

Not necessarily. A cogged belt drive doesn't require a 90° turn if the motor shaft is parallel to the prop's. They have a low form factor, certainly no worse than bevel gears, and they are quiet, too. If you want super-quiet, get the Goodyear Eagle herringbone cogged belt and pulleys.
