The points about the Prius Nimh are they tick all the boxes:

Independent tests (digital measuring devices, a range of tests) show
even 6 year old packs have lost very little capacity - the cells are
high quality;
They have a BMS;
They have a cooling system.

Not perfect but maybe a cheaper option for some.

I sometimes wonder if all Nimh packs had had BMS's as they should have,
would they be far more popular?
