RE: [Electric Boats] Electric Outboard for Dinghy

Hi Mr Scheafer

My dinghy is a Bras d'Or 11 (I build them). It is a 11 feet hard bottom with a beam of 5 feet, weighting approximately 200 pounds.

To go from dock to my morring or other relatively short distances, I am using a Torqeedo Travel 801 (2hp) since 2007. I highly satisfy of the performance and the duration of the Lithium Manganese battery which comes with it. I did 1hour 15 minutes at approximately 3 knots with one charge (mesured with my portable GPS).

This electric outboard is relatively expensive compared with Minn Kota offers, but it is very good value for the money.

The actual replacements for the Travel 801 is either the Travel 503 (1.5hp) or 1003 (3hp). You could probably find them around 1,600$ and 1,900$ respectively or less.

I have no hesitation to recommand either one. This new model is submersible. If you happen to accidently drop the motor in the water, you have an hour to get it out. They are suitable for salt water.

Hope this help,

Regards

Hello there!

I have a Sailboat in Sarasota and I am planing to buy an electric outboard for my 9 feet Dinghy. Minn Kota offers a Saltwater 45 lb thrust for an raesonable price. Anyone who has experience with that Brand ??

Any comments will be appreciated.
