Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Maintaining batteries over the winter

For a data point I have eight 120AH batteries attached to an UPS. They have been "deep" (75%) discharged 3 times in their life, and probably 20% discharged about 6 times. They are four years old with three years in UPS duty and a year on the shelf before that. Two of the deep discharges were to 75% for calibration. Once when put into service three years ago and once last week. The capacity as calculated and tested over about a 24-hour calibration cycle by the UPS during those 75% discharges hasn't changed over three years, even with only a handful of uses in that time.

These are quality telco AGM batteries but I think that you'll find with a half-way decent charger your batteries don't require exercise. The APC UPS I have these on probably doesn't have a very smart charger. It charges to 27.74volts. 75% DoD is 24.77 volts and is not configurable.

Not all batteries are the same. That advice was good for nicads, but your AGMs do not need to be discharged regularly.
