Re: [Electric Boats] Electric Clutches (& TNX Eric)

John I found this site and it is right here by me. http://www.clutches-brakes.com/ I think what I need is an electric brake. Mount it to the input end of the prop shaft. Then connect a shaft that has a pulley on it to the DC generator/motor. When you want power to the prop the brake is on, when you want to charge the batteries the brake is off. I see that something could also be done with a lawnmower clutch. They are rated with 27 hp engines.

First, thanks for the battery charging links Eric. Great background stuff. That will be useful even for my first step, charging using the ICE.
Dan, you mention a clutch in your proposed drive train, has anyone ever tried using an automotive air conditioner clutch to engage a small ICE that would be running an alternator as well, making the electric consumption a non-issue?
I would imagine that they can handle 5 HP?
Maybe one could be modified to a dog clutch arrangement, or pin(s) into a hole(s) kind of thing, with an interlock preventing use at high revs, or maybe any revs for that matter.
There might be some robotics sources for clutches, too.
