First, thanks for the battery charging links Eric. Great background stuff. That will be useful even for my first step, charging using the ICE.
Dan, you mention a clutch in your proposed drive train, has anyone ever tried using an automotive air conditioner clutch to engage a small ICE that would be running an alternator as well, making the electric consumption a non-issue?
I would imagine that they can handle 5 HP?
Maybe one could be modified to a dog clutch arrangement, or pin(s) into a hole(s) kind of thing, with an interlock preventing use at high revs, or maybe any revs for that matter.
There might be some robotics sources for clutches, too.
