Dan, that was an inspiration. Who woulda thunk it, www.clutches-brakes.com !
Seems like, depending on prices, you can get better stuff than adapting old car parts!
I had another idea, dunno if it is applicable to anything, but on chainsaws, they use a centrifugal clutch. It is like a little brake drum that is the 'driven' component, and the brake 'shoes' (the driver component), inside are weights that swing outwards and grip the drum. If this were used in conjunction with a few multiple smaller electric motors, one clutch for each motor, then the ICE could be used via some kind of heavier duty clutch, but the electric drives would only engage (automatically) when the electric motors were powered up.
Good site, thanks for the link. And the great thing is that industrial stuff tends to be better priced than consumer stuff.

John I found this site and it is right here by me.
http://www.clutches-brakes.com/ I think what I need is an electric
brake. Mount it to the input end of the prop shaft. Then connect a
shaft that has a pulley on it to the DC generator/motor. When you
want power to the prop the brake is on, when you want to charge the
batteries the brake is off. I see that something could also be done
with a lawnmower clutch. They are rated with 27 hp engines.
