Denny,
I've been working on getting my 18' catboat conversion project to a powerable state since asking for help on powering ideas. I've given up on the idea of an electric outboard in the cockpit well because they seem too niosy to me. I really like your design and it's the way I want to go. You had told me to give you the specs on the boat and you could help me out if you recall. I could really use your help.
In the pics I posted under 18' catboat conversion, I shot a few pics with the 17"x17" bronze prop with 36"x 1" stainless or nibrel shaft. I removed the centerboard trunk and board and am going to build mahogany seats over the bunks in the former cabin area.I looked aft under the cockpit and saw room for an inboard engine and the hollowed out keel space. I noticed I had room to drill through for the shaft without having to drill too far. Today I cut out a 3'x 3' section in the cockpit to expose this area and removed two lead pigs from the keel hollow as well as some newpaper packing that was used for some of the glass work(March 13, 1972!)I'll take some pics so you can see what I'm talking about and post them tomorrow night.
The boat is 18' overall with a waterline of about the same. 8' beam and draws 18 or 24"- can't remember which tonight. Weight with sailing gear and cabin top was 2,500lbs. Without the cabin top, centerboard and trunk,15 lead pigs cockpit seats and rigging I estimate the weight to be about 1,700lbs. I may have to put some of the pigs back to balance the boat on the waterline(old or new).
To the port bow of the cabin bulkhead will be the steering and power controls.Steerein with a vertical tiller. Aft will be open for port boarding steps and three or four wicker chairs. wicker chairs.I removed the cockpit floor carefully and it will be easy enough to use it for motor access.
I guess help on power, transmission, batteries and their placement would help me. I want to get wiring etc. finished before I do woodwork paint, gelcoat. Doesn't look good if it doesn't run.
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Kevin R. Torpey
