Thought I better put this in a new thread.
I mentioned in a previous reply I'm looking into electric propulsion backup for the CLC Pocketship I'm building. It displaces about 1500 lbs loaded and they recommend a 2-3 HP motor. I'll be mostly in the Chesapeake Bay so there will be some current to fight at times, but not excessive. I'd like a few hours of motoring capability. 4-5 knots is plenty.
I have a some 100 A-Hr lithium iron phosphate batteries left over from an abandoned motorcycle project. (Anyone need a 7" motor?). I'm thinking of making a 24V pack from 8 of those. Something like the Torqeedo seems appropriate, but one that can use my batteries. It seems a simple trolling type setup that can be slid up and down a pole fastened to the transom would work well. I'd like electrical reversing and can steer using the rudder.
A simple transom mount trolling motor would seem right, but I guess they are made to go pretty slow? Could one push the boat at 4 knots?
