What kind of BLDC kit do you want to use (kind of motor) ?

You should maybe use a water cooled motor.

The voltage of the batteries pack can be select from the max voltage of the SEVCON GEN4 controller :
CALB 100FI Vcell max = 3.8V x 16 = 60.8V < 69.6V (maximum working voltage for GEN4 48V)

Do you plan to use 15S2P, or 16S2P? I thought 16S was standard for 48 V nominal. Maybe I'm wrong?

Hi all,

I am posting my current project to see if anybody has any thoughts or advice.

Project:

1972 Buchan 37, kept on Lake Washington (fresh water) entire life, used very little.

WL: 27.3 ft

Cruising speed: 8 kts (efficient, built for racing)

Beam: 10 ft

Keel: fin

Displacement: 13,000 lbs

Current ICE: 40hp inboard diesel (to be removed)

Planned Upgrade:

Motor/Controller:  10kW BLDC motor using a kit from Thunderstruck - 10kW (48V)

Batteries: 15S2P LiFeP04 prismatic Calb CA100FI cells (quantity = 30), weight = 226lbs total.  Batteries to be stored in keel where old diesel fuel tanks were previously located.  Battery management system will be used.

House to be served by DC to DC converter for 12V and inverter for 120V AC.  Power use on board includes lights, communication, depth/speed equipment, phone chargers, and occasional microwave use.

Type of use:

Exploring the San Juan Islands and the Salish Sea (Puget Sound to B.C.).  Occasional vacations up to 1 week.

This should provide about 7.7kWh useable storage assuming 80% depth of discharge.  If I find out I need more, there is space to double the batteries.

Thoughts and reservations:

I considered 72V system (12kW kit) to ensure adequate power and 72V to reduce lines losses, but for safety I like 48V.  Also, at 48V, off-the-shelf equipment are more available such as battery switches.

The power issue between 72V and 48V remains a concern (getting through Deception Pass comes to mind).  I may just install the 12kW kit so that I can be ready to increase the number of cells to get to 72V if I determine later that I need the higher power.  There is room available for the extra cells if needed.

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.
