Completely agree, individual energy use has to come down, plus we need to promote lowering the world population, or nature will lower it for us... The earth just can't handle these numbers forever.
On a separate note.
We bought a plug in electric Volvo, and I have to say, all my cars in the future will be electric. It is quiet, no exhaust and smooth. The only regret with the Volvo is that I wish it went further on electric or was all electric. When in electric mode, you definitely drive more conservatively. It becomes a challenge to regen going down hills, and stopping at a light. Once people try electric cars, they will not go back, in my opinion.
The extra cost of the plug in electric was about $10k, but there is a $5k federal tax rebate, so $5k out of pocket. But that also included some options/features/upgrades. So it will pay off in saved gas at around 50,000 miles. But if the cost of gas goes up, then it will pay off faster.
Many car companies are coming out with electric cars in the next 2-3 years. The price will drop, battery tech will get better, and fossil fuel cars will lose market share rapidly.
