Re: [Electric Boats] EPA commuication regarding 15% Ethanol use

Mike,
So "isobutanol" is substantially different from E85 - right?

If isobutanol was introduced, would it ONLY be used for the marine industry, or would it replace E85?

My thought (which may be very wrong) is that if the rest of the automotive industry has to go to E85, and we try to go to isobutanol - our prices will be MUCH higher than the regular gas pump prices, since our volume will be so much smaller and will be a very specialized market.

I already see a HUGE difference at the lake for "marine gas" - which is claimed to have an additive ("like Seafoam") in it already - though hard to say if the original "flavor" of gas was regular or premium...

I can tell you that currently in Texas, I see prices around $2.25 on the road, but close to $4.00/gal at the dock.

In my case, I have a large cabin cruiser with a total capacity of 265 gallons.  If I were a sailboat, I would NEVER buy gas at the dock!

The "Buckey's" chain down here has started carrying "non-ethanol" gas as an option - but they are charging $3 or more per gallon.  For my car/truck, I don't see paying 30% more for 10% less alcohol.   But if I had a small engine - it would be worth it!   (Last I heard, one of the marinas on the lake was offering ethanol-free gas at $5/gal.)

SO.....   What is isobutanol?  And how expensive would it be?
Will the cost of gas make the cost of lithium batteries seem not so bad???   :)

This is a note from a Marine industry publication.  It is important for all of us who use small gas power motors such as the Honda 2000.  The use of over the road 15% ethanol gas ithese small gas power motors is not good as the 15 percent ethanol will damage these motors.

From "Trade Only" 4/13/18

The Environmental Protection Agency is seeking public comment on approving isobutanol — another term for biobutanol — for highway use.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association is urging the recreational marine industry to say yes to making the biofuel available to the public via a Boating United alert.

The marine industry has done significant testing on isobutanol and has determined it to be a solution for marine engines, versus fuel blended with 15 percent ethanol, which has been shown to harm marine and other small engines.

"This is something the marine industry has been pushing for years," NMMA federal and legal affairs vice president Nicole Vasilaros told Trade Only Today.

Approval for highway use would start the process of integrating that biofuel into the fuel supply.

Adding isobutanol into the fuel supply would also mean the nation could comply with the Renewable Fuel Standard, which was updated in 2007, to mandate an increasing use of biofuels in the overall supply, without continuing to increase the percentage of ethanol.
