If you're handy a DIY kit isn't a bad way to go. Even if you buy a completed unit from a vendor you still need to install it & that's when the fun really begins. DIY doesn't mean you get out of this cheaply IMHO? I purchased the drive as a kit from Thunderstruck but decided to go with a helical gear drive in lieu of a belt driven system. My system is 95% complete & when my FLA battery bank arrives next week I'll be into this for $6,300.00
But what did I get for 6300? A 10KW motor with controller, throttle, Clearview dsplay, helical gear drive, drop pan, motor mounts, flexible coupling, drip proof stuffing box, prop shaft with couplings, used 3 bladed 14x10 prop, battery switch & battery charger. Point is be careful because there will be many unforseen expenses whether you purchase a unit from a vendor or piece it together on your own.
