Thanks to all for the great information on MOFSET PWM controllers. All make sense. Pretty clear that the way to go when I need more current or voltage than the controller can handle is to bypass the controller and just use high current switches or solenoids. This is sort-of the setup I have now. As I mentioned I have been using a homemade drop resistor to ramp up the current when first engaging solenoids. Can anyone recommend a simple solid-state device or circuit that will ramp up the starting current over a few seconds to avoid the resistor? Don't really see the need for a high power controller when solenoids and a few extra 12 volts batteries can do the job simply.
