Re: [Electric Boats] Re: TAB THRUSTERS

Hi
Actually I was thinking or using 2 used trim tabs off another boat I have.
Mount them side by side in the concave portion of my transom. That way I could lift them for shallow waters.
I would then mount a fixed thruster under each tab.
This may or not work.

Your thoughts please.

Howard

Well done on your boat project. By tab thrusters I am assuming you mean the MinnKota or Lenco trim tab mounted trolling motors. Trolling motors are designed for a top speed of about 4 miles per hour. At 16 feet this should be near the hull speed of your boat. Borrow a GPS and check the top speed with your single trolling motor. If it is near 4 mph you will not get much more speed but more thrust control would be advantageous. I believe steering by swivelling the motor gives better control than a rudder. If you need more thrust, a second trolling motor is your cheapest option. Get full variable speed for efficiency, the stepped speed motors are not efficient at part throttle. The thrusters would certainly work. A single Parsun or Torqueedo would offer greater efficiency (battery range) at more money. Speed and range (battery limitations) will have to be a low priority for any successful electric cruiser.
