This is commonly said but as long as the batteries are of the same type and voltages you can safely parrallel bateries of differing age and even differing capacity. this is analagous to different sized water tanks linked together by pipes . They will all settle to the same level.
differing characteristics ARE relevant when batteries are in series .
The main hazard in parrallel operation is the possibility that
one of the batteries will break down and short out the others . this is not a common occurance and can be gaurded against by a fuse in each parrallel branch.
