Re: [Electric Boats] Electric Sidewheeler

Not brushed, never.

Use 220V Ac brushless servos (if powe in kW is not huge ie under 10 hp
each).

Vastly more efficient, cheap, dont make heat, no sparks, last forever,
vastly more torque ie what you want.

220V because its a commodity, and everyone makes n V dc to 220V DC
inverters in any size you want, cheap. Commodity.

Cots is always the winner.

Second option.

Use a VFD and 3-phase ac motors. Cheap, last forever.

I have DC PM motors of 2.5 Hp (10 of), servo controllers for same and
industrial (KBIC) controllers for same.

3-phase motor and 2.2 kW Hitacho VFD.

2.5 kW Ac servo.

The relative output (and quality) of same is:

Brushed: 2
VFD: 5
Servo: 10

Ie a VFD/3-phase will give you about 3x better results.
The servo will double them.

As you total power is battery is the limiting factor, and 10x-50x more
expensive, then you get upto 100x bettter results with servos.

Pick lowest-rpm highest torque import servos You can find.
Around 1000 rpm top end is still common, commodity.

My 2.5 kW AC servo delivers near-equivalent torque (at 1/2 rpm range, ie
0-1000 rpm vs 0-3000 rpm) to a 10 kW VFD/3-phase motor on 50.000 €
equipment.

Comparison is 102 Nm peak (1200 rpm iirc) for Haas ST10 CNC lathe (say
approx 80-90 Nm typical for Haas with VFD+3-phase) vs 90 Nm at any-speed
for me.

Torque is, essentially, what drives a boat.
