Brushless motor reversing is accomplished within the controller, generally. Only an issue if you are trying to build your own controller which is relatively easy for PWM into a brushed motor, but more complex when building a three phase PMAC/BLDC setup. I couldn't even begin to design a good PMAC/BLDC controller. Just about everyone buys off the shelf controllers. So no biggie if you do that. Also keep in mind that brushless motors are safer when you have gasoline or propane appliances onboard, and some countries actually have rules against using these together. If you cook on diesel or electric, no biggie. Brushes can last a long time and are fairly easy to replace. Myself, I am in the brushless camp.
Hub motors is an interesting idea, but regular motors give you more flexibility in that you can go direct drive or geared/belted drive so that you can change the reduction ratio if you don't get it right the first time.
